This is the doctoral dissertation of Paul Levi, lawyer and co-founder of the Communist Party of Germany. For a selection of Levi’s later Marxist writings in English, see the excellent collection in the HM book series, now available in paperback. [On a sidenote, these were quite astonishing times where you could obtain a doctoral degree with a thesis of 38 pages…]

Sibylle Quack points out in Geistig frei und niemandes Knecht – Paul Levi/Rosa Luxemburg (1983), that she perceives a clear link between the topic of Levi’s dissertation and his later activity as a lawyer and socialist activist/politician because according to Quack, the defense of the individual’s rights against the state was always a central issue for Levi
